La sede principal del Banco de Inglaterra

El Banco de Inglaterra (en inglés, Governor and Company of the Bank of England) es el banco central del Reino Unido, y es el encargado de dictar la política monetaria del país a través de su Comité de Política Monetaria. Fue creado en 1694 para funcionar como el banco oficial del Gobierno del Reino Unido, y ésta es todavía es una de sus funciones. Es también el encargado de emitir y controlar la circulación de la libra esterlina.

Su sede se encuentra ubicada en Londres, en la calle Threadneedle, motivo por el cual en ocasiones se le denomina popularmente como The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street o The Old Lady (en español, La Vieja Dama de la Calle Threadneedle o La Vieja Dama). El actual gobernador del Banco de Inglaterra es Mervyn King, que sustituyó el 30 de junio de 2003 a Sir Edward George en el cargo.

Pertenece al Sistema Europeo de Bancos Centrales si bien, como el Reino Unido no ha adoptado el euro, no ha cedido sus competencias en materia de política monetaria al Banco Central Europeo.
